Grabbing a Gold One


Mary Witmer set the gold standard for the Ephrata girls' track and field program.
 
And Saturday afternoon, she took it one step farther when Witmer became the first Mountaineer girl to win a state championship.
 
"When someone works for something -- and we certainly work her hard -- it's nice to see them get the ultimate reward,'' Ephrata coach John Keller said. "And she did it.''

Chambersburg clips Mounts


Looking at Andrew Shreiner after he helped the Chambersburg baseball team to a win Monday evening, you might have thought somebody had dumped a cooler of Gatorade on him.
 
No, it was just sweat that had soaked through his T-shirt and uniform.
 
It was a good sweat, though. Shreiner fired a four-hitter and went 2-for-3 to lead the Trojans to a 5-2 victory over Ephrata in the first round of the District 3 Class AAAA tournament.

Carlisle ends Mounts Season


A year ago, Ephrata ended Carlisle’s dreams of a District Three title when the Mounts defeated the Thundering Herd, 8-5, in the championship game at Hersheypark Stadium.
 
Tuesday night, in the first round of Districts at Carlisle, the second-seeded Thundering Herd returned the favor with a 14-4 victory over the Mounts.
